Dedham Square Circle is a nonprofit organization seeking a year-round, part-time Farmers Market Manager to oversee the operation of the year round Dedham Farmers Markets. This position is responsible for on-site set-up, tear-down, and management of the markets.

The job days and hours are:

• Winter: Once per month (November–March), Saturdays, 8:00am–2:00pm

• Spring: Every other Saturday (April–early June), 8:00am–2:00pm

• Summer: Every Wednesday (mid-June–mid/late October), 11:45am–7:00pm

This is a physical, public-facing position that takes place primarily outdoors (and indoors during winter markets). The role requires strong communication skills, leadership ability, and comfort working in varied weather conditions.

Position Overview

The Farmers Market Manager is responsible for leading market-day operations, including set-up and tear-down, vendor coordination and parking, safety oversight, overseeing volunteers, completing simple reports, and maintaining the market storage facility.

This role builds and maintains positive relationships with vendors, community partners, neighboring businesses, and shoppers to create a safe and vibrant gathering place where vendors can prosper.

The Manager serves as the on-site point person and works closely with the Farmers Market Planner and Executive Director.

Physical Requirements

This is an active, hands-on position requiring the ability to:

• Lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly

• Set up and break down canopy tents and equipment

• Step in and out of a storage shed

• Carry large boxes and equipment

• Work in rain, heat, wind, and freezing temperatures

Job Responsibilities

Market Logistics & Operations

• Transport tents, equipment and supplies from the on-site shed and ensure items are in good working order

• Lead complete market set-up and tear-down, ensuring:

  • Vendor placement in designated spots

  • Market Manager tent, community tent and seating, craft tent and supplies (when market is outdoors)

  • Accessibility compliance

  • Hand washing station locations

  • Safety cone placement

  • Market and sponsor signage in prominent location

  • Misting tent and free water is available on hot days (summer)

  • Trash removal

  • Cleanliness of the Church Green or indoor space (including sweeping/vacuuming in winter)

• Maintain welcoming and neat Market Manager booth and community information table

• Check community tables and craft tent are clean and neat

• Follow Health and Fire Department regulations

• Communicate layout changes to the Farmers Market Planner

• Reserve vendor parking (mid-June–October) by placing cones and signage on Tuesday evenings or before 8:00am Wednesday

• Direct safe vehicle traffic on and around the market site; ensure fire lanes remain clear

• Ensure Farmers Market parking and promotional signage is highly visible to attract customers

• Adapt layout as needed due to weather or seasonal changes

• Manage volunteers

• Complete training and process SNAP transactions

• Safely store SNAP equipment and SNAP dollars between market dates

• Protect electronic equipment from theft or weather damage and ensure devices are charged

• Use seasonal decorations to enhance market

• Ensure sponsor signage is prominently displayed as directed

• Maintain a positive working relationship with First Church & Parish Dedham and the Building Use Committee

• Provide basic first aid/first responder support if needed

Guest & Vendor Relations

• Welcome guests and provide customer service

• Assist SNAP customers with transactions and educate shoppers about HIP benefits

• Encourage guests to sign up for raffles or email lists

• Collect and give vendors receipts for Dedham Dollars

• Maintain supportive vendor relationships

• Troubleshoot issues and resolve conflicts professionally

• Distribute/collect passports and give out rewards for POP Club 4 week program in Summer

Data Tracking & Reporting

• Track SNAP, Gift Card and PoP Club transactions

• Record volunteer, musician, and vendor attendance

• Count shoppers and track vendor fees

• Submit reports to the Farmers Market Planner and Executive Director by the day after each market

• Complete Accident/Fall Reports and immediately notify the Executive Director of incidents

Marketing Support

• Take photos or short videos of vendors or activities as requested for marketing purposes

Qualifications

• Experience with farmers markets or related event management preferred

• Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions

• Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly

• Must be able to arrive on time on market dates via car, car share or bus (34e bus is 2 blocks from market)

• Access to a personal computer or phone and ability to submit digital reports and view Marketspread information

• Strong communication and leadership skills

• Comfortable enforcing policies and holding vendors accountable

• Passion for local food and farms; knowledge of community food systems a plus

Compensation: $22-$25/hour depending upon experience.
